While Arizona is known for its sunny weather and beautiful landscapes, the state’s unique geology means elevated levels of radon do exist in homes. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers Arizona to be in Zone 2 which means there’s a moderate level of possibility for radon gas indoors. However, the EPA recommends that all homes be tested for radon levels, regardless of zone designation.
What Is Radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas that forms naturally when uranium decays in soil, rock, and water. It’s odorless, colorless, and tasteless, making it undetectable without proper testing. When radon gas enters your home—usually through cracks in foundations or other entry points—it can accumulate to dangerous levels. According to the EPA, exposure to radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The EPA emphasizes that the only way to know if your home has radon is to test for it. Testing is straightforward, affordable, and provides critical information to protect your family’s health.
Radon Myth Busters!
Myth 1: Radon Isn’t a Problem in Arizona
Busted: While Arizona is a moderate risk state, radon can still be present in homes here. Out of 600+ radon tests performed by AJF in 2024, 13% of homes came back with results above 4.0 pCi/L which is the cutoff for remediation recommended by the EPA. Radon levels vary by location, and certain areas in Arizona, particularly near granite-rich soils, have been found to have elevated radon levels. The only way to know if your home is at risk is to test.
Myth 2: New Homes Don’t Have Radon
Busted: Radon can infiltrate homes of any age. In fact, newer homes can sometimes trap radon more effectively due to their energy-efficient designs, which limit airflow and ventilation. This makes testing in new builds just as important as in older homes.
How do you mitigate Radon?
You can fix a radon problem. The EPA recommends homes be remediated if the radon level is 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter) or higher. Radon reduction systems work and can reduce radon levels in your home by up to 99%. Even very high levels can be reduced to acceptable levels.
